When the 351 Cleveland was discontinued after the 1974 model year Ford needed another engine in that size range since the production of the 351 Windsor was not sufficient.
351 cleveland or windsor. The 351 Cleveland is a member of the 335 series family of Ford small-block engines. Its large ports and oversize canted valves give it more horsepower and allow it to run at a higher rpm than the Windsor. The valve covers have a twisting curve and are attached by eight bolts.
It uses small 14 mm spark plugs. Sure 351 refers to the engine size but there were essentially three major versions of the Ford 351the Windsor Cleveland and Modified. Officially Ford never called these engines 400351 Modified or 400M351M.
Modified was a slang designation originally applied by Ford enthusiasts and the name just stuck. The 351 Cleveland is heavier and more difficult to find hi-performance parts for nowadays. They were last built and offered in Fords in 1974 1973 for Mustangs.
The 1975 and beyond were 351Ms. The 351 Windsors were first offered in 1968 1969 for Mustangs and used in Ford trucks up into the mid-90s and 1995 Cobra R Mustangs. The Racing Boss 351 not to be confused with the Ford 335 engine Cleveland-based Boss 351 is a crate engine from Ford Racing Performance Parts.
The block was based on the 351 cu in 5752 cc Ford Windsor engine but uses Cleveland sized 275 in 70 mm main bearing journals. Deck height choices include 92 in 234 mm and 95 in 241 mm. However when it comes stock vs.
Stock the Cleveland will walk all over the Windsor because it has the ability to breate as to where the Windsors stock heads are strangling it to death. If aftermarket heads are just not possible on your budget then Id go with the Cleveland because its got the better heads already even the open chamber 2V heads flow more than any common 289302351W head. The Mustang first offered a 351-cubic-inch small-block V-8 in 1969.
Known as the 351 Windsorfor Fords Windsor Ontario engine plantit was more than a longer-stroke version of the 302 using a different block and firing order. Offered in two- and four-barrel carburetor versions the Windsor was a solid performer. When the 351 Cleveland was discontinued after the 1974 model year Ford needed another engine in that size range since the production of the 351 Windsor was not sufficient.
Ford took the 400 engines tall-deck block and de-stroked it with a shorter 35 in 89 mm stroke crankshaft to produce a 351 cubic inch 58 L engine. I dont quite understand where the idea that the 351 Windsor block is superior to the Cleveland ever came from. They are very similar in strength main webbing cylinder walls etc.
The Cleveland has some advantages larger distributor gear better cam location etc. The Windsor has a taller deck height but big 3 inch mains which are not an asset. Another popular upgrade is to build a Clevor engine which uses 351 Cleveland style canted valve heads on a Windsor block.
The cylinder bore spacing and head bolt patterns of Cleveland and Windsor heads are identical which makes the better flowing Cleveland heads a natural choice. The 351 Cleveland is a work horse engine. The 351 Windsor is one of my favorite Ford engines but is a completely different animal from the 351C.
The 351 W is in the family of windsors like the 302 and 289. In fact the heads on a 351W will fit a 302 or 289 motor but not a Cleveland. When the 351 Cleveland was discontinued after the 1974 model year Ford needed another engine in that size range since production of the 351 Windsor was not sufficient.

Thinking about swapping some 351 Cleveland-4v pedestal mount rocker arms on my stock 50 to get a little extra lift out of the factory cam. Looking specifically at the Melling MR888 rockers. They appear to have the same dimension as the windsor rocker arms from the pivot point to the spring pad.
Mid-1970 the new 351 Cleveland replaced the 351 Windsor. The 351 Cleveland featured many advancements especially in the cylinder heads which were patterned after the 429. Ports were huge with.
