R12 to R134A Conversion There are two ways to convert the air conditioning of your vehicle to the R134A gas. One is the factory method where you would need to replace the AC parts and the other is to modify the existing components to use R134A. A charge level between 75 and 85 is recommended when converting from R12 to R134a refrigerant.
If no conversion information is provided there is an easy formula to calculate the difference in charge level. This works when the R12 charge specification is listed in pounds. Take the R12 charge specification and multiply it by 09.
R134a requires a different size dryer to make sure it functions properly so you will need to install a new dryer to convert R12 to R134a. The last piece of your system that youll need to change is the pressure ports to convert R12 to R134a. Open the engine compartment of your vehicle.
Find the high and low side service ports for the R12 air-conditioning system. Push the low side retrofit R134a fitting over the old fitting and use a wrench to tighten it. Torque the fitting to 20 foot-pounds.

R12 and R134a are not compatible. R134a requires a much higher pressure to work. The only difference between a R12 R134 or R12 replacement is the oil in it.

New o-rings standard viton o-rings work great. The most important thing when converting to 134 is that you MUST make sure to put the system into a complete vacuum 30Hg to burn off the moisture and residue from the old r-12. I suggest finding a shop that wont charge too much to reclaim the R-12 from the system and suck it down into a vacuum.
